Playwright number two of Theater J’s upcoming season is Alexandra Gersten-Vassilaros of the controversial show, The Argument. A play that probes at the topic of parenthood, The Argument, which premiered at the Vineyard Theatre in 2005, was work shopped at NY Stage and Film Co. in 2004. Theater J’s adaptation of this production will take place October 23rd thru November 24th of this year.
Another highly acclaimed piece by Gersten-Vassilaros is Omnium Gatherum, which she co-wrote with Theresa Rebeck and was also work shopped at NY Stage and Film, 2003 Humana Festival, Off Broadway, and as well as countless regional and international productions. Omnium Gatherum was also published in BEST PLAYS of 2004 and as a 2004 finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
Other works of hers include Mother of Invention (Steppenwolf Theatre, Williamstown Theatre Festival in Summer 2003), directed by dir. Nicholas Martin; My Thing of Love (Steppenwolf Theatre Co, Jefferson Award and Broadway), Supple in Combat (Steppenwolf Theatre), and I Never told Anyone (A short play, McCarter Theatre). In addition to her full length productions, Gersten-Vassilaros’s one-act, The Airport Play, was included in the 2005 Ensemble Studio Theatre Marathon.
She is a graduate of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, a member of The Actors Studio, and a member playwright at the HB Playwrights Foundation where seven of her short plays have been presented and recently published in a collection by Smith and Kraus.
